Does anyone have to visit my house?

Not necessarily. If you do not get DSL from the Telco, the telco may still have to provide the (new) copper line, then the DSL providing company (CLEC) comes to do any necessary inside wiring. In many cases, the communication between the Telco and the CLEC (Covad, Northpoint etc), is not great, and the line cannot be found, or is not left sufficiently close to the premise, necessitating further visits and delays. For Telco ADSL, however, an existing line can be converted to an ADSL line, and the Telco normally has an “install yourself” package where they ship you the necessary materials, provision your line, and you simply hook up your modem and computer. In some cases, they might have to visit to install a splitter or a filter, and/or upgrade the NID (which is the phone junction box in your premise

Basically you always know where on the internet your machine is because it isn’t moving around.

How is DSL different from other Internet connections?

DSL technology provides a dedicated service over your existing phone lines or Dry loop (without activee phone line). This means that you don’t have to share your local access connection with other users.

How does DSL work?

DSL is based on Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), a super-fast modem technology that can provide data transmission at significantly higher speeds than your standard 56K modem. DSL transforms standard twisted-pair copper telephone wires into a high-speed digital pipe. Since this wiring is already in place in most homes and offices, millions of users can switch to DSL service without the need to run new wires to your location. DSL is designed to take advantage of the portion of the bandwidth not used for voice calls. DSL technology splits your phone line into three information channels. One carries data at high speeds from the Internet to your home computer. Another channel transports data at moderate speeds from your home computer to the Internet. The third channel handles regular phone calls and faxes. You’ll be able to surf the Internet while making phone calls or sending a fax. Your regular phone line will continue to work in the event that a power failure affects your computer.

How fast is DSL?

Nextelle offers several packages with download speeds ranging from 192kbps – 100 mbps. Nextelle DSL customers enjoy the ability to download files and surf the Internet at lightning speeds. Throughput speeds experienced will be lower than connection speeds based on factors including the distance between your home and the telephone company central office; the condition of your line; traffic on the network and the Internet; and the performance of servers hosting Web sites you visit among other factors.

How does DSL support both voice and data on the same line?

Normal telephone usage occupies a very small portion of the total range of frequencies available over phone lines.  DSL uses a range of frequencies that begin above where normal telephone usage stops.  Micro-filters prevent the different ranges of signals from causing interference with one another.

DSL Speed Differences Between Households

The rated maximum bandwidth of a DSL connection often cannot be reached. Additionally, actual DSL speeds vary between households. Factors affecting DSL speed include:

Quality of the phone line at your residence. Neighborhoods with better copper wiring can achieve somewhat faster DSL speeds.

Length of the phone line between the residence and the phone company hub (often called “central office”). DSL technology is “distance sensitive” because its performance decreases significantly as you get further away from this hub.

Service glitches. While normally a constant, DSL speed can suddenly drop if the service provider has technical difficulty with their network. Speeds should return to normal after a few minutes or hours.

Short of rewiring their residence, customers can do little about changing these factors. Other factors you can more directly control include:

Spyware on the computer(s). Even when the DSL network may be functioning at full speed, spyware programs may be consuming the bandwidth, robbing your

DSL speed. Anti-spyware programs should be run regularly on networks to prevent this problem.

Misconfigured wires or wireless router. Routers sit between your computers and the Internet connection. If not functioning properly, a router can greatly limit the DSL speed achievable on all computers. Temporarily connecting a computer directly to the Internet can help diagnose this situation.

Slow wireless network connection. In extreme cases, a very slow Wi-Fi connection between a computer and a wireless home network will not keep pace with the speed of the DSL Internet connection. Improving the quality of the Wi-Fi connection will solve this problem.

Old computer(s). Very old computers lacking sufficient processing power or memory cannot keep pace with a high-speed DSL connection. You can verify this problem by comparing the DSL speed between computers at the residence.

Different Types of Business ISPs

Internet Providers have changed quite a bit in the past decades, ditching old technology for new ones and providing more services to growing businesses. Especially for businesses who hope to see growth, it may be time to hop on the bandwagon of change to help better your company’s future. With a much more available selection to choose from, it seems nearly impossible to make the wrong choice for your company on its road ahead. However to help make your choice a little easier, here are the most common types of internet and a little about them:

    • Cable: Easily one of the more popular types of internet, cable transmits internet to businesses via cable companies. Plus, cable tends to be one of the more cost effective ways to stream internet.
    • DSL: DSL is another popular type of internet provider but is severely outdated with a number of limitations such as poor internet speeds compared to other providers.
    • Fiber Optic: One of the fastest types of internet providers is Fiber Optic. They send the internet to business via special tubes that use beams of light to deliver internet services as fast as 1gbps. The only limitation businesses might face is that it is only available in some areas. Not to mention, it is also much more expensive than other providers due to the fact it is among the fastest. In addition, internet speeds are unaffected during inclement weather compared to other providers and it is nearly impossible to hack fiber optic due to their copper wire construction.
    • T1 Internet: This type of internet provider is a form of fiber optic which is primarily made for businesses who need a faster connection for their devices in the workplace.
    • Satellite: One of the most standard internet providers is satellite. The provider uses the help of satellite dishes to send the Internet to and from businesses and are majorly the only type of internet provider available in more remote areas. Although satellite is considered to be fast speed, it’s much slower than more popular internet providers such as fiber optic or cable.
    • Fixed Wireless: If you can’t figure it out from the name, fixed wireless sends internet connections from a radio signal to a fixed place. As fast as fixed wireless has been ranked, it can be rather slow from interference from solid objects such as trees.
    • Dial-up Internet: Dial-up internet is incredibly unreliable and rarely affects many businesses today. Not to mention, the oldest type of internet to date.

The great thing about most ISP providers is that they provide much more than just internet. Most providers also offer packages of services to business such as TV, phone, and email. Luckily, however, it can end up saving businesses a lot of money in the long run.

In addition, most providers also provide full internet connectivity packages such as Ethernet services. For most businesses, this makes it much easier to manage online services and helps lower costs. With experienced providers, businesses can experience a load off their back for handling their own internet services which in turn helps lower costs such as IT experts.
Also, a great thing for businesses to look out for are consultative services. As much as ISP can help improve business efficiency, a consultant can advise specifically how much internet a business needs and help remote device management.
